Mark M.O.D.E.

Few artists have the level of success M.O.D.E. have experienced so early in his career, but it seemed obvious from very early on that these guy was different. A little over months since their inception, and both the industry and clubbers around the world are already hooked on the infectious sound that is unique to M.O.D.E. Being hassled by the likes of Sasha, John Digweed, Eric Prydz, Hernan Cattaneo, Dubfire and Richie Hawtin, on a daily basis for his upfront releases is something Mark is learning to take in his stride, and with various original work for his brand new M. O.D.E. imprint on the way, things are looking good. Witnessing first hand just how his productions fill a dance floor, it instantly hits home why he is already so heavily in demand. His tracks combine a cutting edge style that fuses elements of house and techno whilst always containing a sexy low end funk that is devastating sound systems all over the world. It’s little wonder that John Digweed (who discovered him) and Richie Hawtin named him one of the new promises of electronic music.

Interview with M.O.D.E.

So why M.O.D.E or just Mode? And why that name?
Both of them are right I guess … and about the name , it just sounds good I guess , the points are only for give it strength.
You have taken everyone by surprise! You should be really happy!
Hahaha! Yes I ‘am! , but all this is even a bigger surprise for me!
So what’s your secret?
There’s no secret I guess , I just put my ass on the chair and get the job done.
What is it about that sort of music that gets you going? Why do you like it so?
Progressive is something that always seems to get a room going at the end of a night. It’s got a real kind of uplifting feel. If its hard and fast techno all night long, then by 3am some people can really be flagging. So if you take people on a journey through tech house and techno and then mix in some of the cooler progressive tracks as the night wears on then it works well. Besides, an awful lot of the techno tracks these days could be classed as prog anyway and vice versa – the boundaries are now so small and mixed up.

And what do you aim to achieve in your own productions? what is the thought process you go through when making a track or remixing?
Huge diversity and different sounds is something I always try. Sometimes a track will have a very simple groove and then the next piece of work will have fairly complicated arrangements. I like to keep people guessing as to what my next piece of work will sound like, rather than people knowing straight away as to what the sound will be. With remixes I always try and work to a plan where I hold all the noticeable original elements back until quite a long way in. I like to tease the listener, so that they think they can hear the original track but are not sure.

And how involved are the artists and labels you remix? how much feedback/guidance do you get?
I don’t normally get given any guidance as people will already know the kind of sound that I’ll be putting onto the project. Sometimes I’ll let the label know the exact direction the remix is taking and that seems to work really well as I feel that labels like to be kept up to date with the progress of a remix. Once the remix is at a stage I am happy with, I’ll deliver it and await the feedback. All the remixes I have done so far have all needed approval from the original artist so it’s great to know that these massive producers are approving my work – it means all those hours in the studio are worth it!

What do you hope people will think or feel when they hear your music?
Hopefully it will make them dance! Something that I always hear is that people think my music sounds very different from anything else that is out in the current scene. They say that it is almost like a number of different sounds within a song, which is pretty much what I am trying to achieve with my production.

A sus 34 años el DJ y productor Ferry Corsten ha lanzado su ultimo sencillo “Into the dark”, está trabajando en la preparación de la segunda edición de “Full On Ferry”, y es uno de los nombres grandes en el cartel de Trance Energy, que será el próximo sábado en Utrecht.

Internacionalmente, la estrella Rotterdam es muy favorecida, ¿cual es la conclusión? Pues DAG habla con él en su ciudad natal.”El está telefonando al Reino Unido ahora. ¿Cuanto tiempo necesita usted? La radio mexicana llamará cualquier minuto también!”, su representante me comenta. El DJ de Rotterdam ha tomado algunos días de su trabajo para estar en su estudio y trabajar en su nuevo sencillo.

El avance tecnológico es enorme. ¿Cómo le haces frente a éso?
Ya no toco con viniles, solamente CDs. Eso significa un gran descanso para mi espalda, Haha. Los viniles tienen sus encantos, pero no importa para la audiencia de todas formas. Desean ser entretenidos, y una caja de viniles es muy pesada andar arrastrando. Técnicamente, puedes hacer más con CDs y MP3s. Trance se produce ratios específicos de pitch. Si el disco lo haces girar más rápido, la escala del tono cambia. Con los adelantos digitales de hoy en día, puedes ajustarla mientras que tocas. ¡Muy útil!

Vas a tocar en Trance Energy este sábado. ¿Esta fiesta significa algo para ti?
Trance Energy sigue siendo la firma de las fiestas de Trance en Holanda. Tan solo agregas un poco más de ti, y buscas canciones anteriores y las remezclas un poco. Esta fiesta es una con audiencia especial. Los que vienen a esta fiesta, vienen por el trance, y lo mas probable es que tengan altas expectativas. Eso le da una alta tensión a la fiesta, pero de una manera sana (como DJ).

También te reunirás con tu viejo amigo, Tiesto. Ustedes dos formaron Gouryella en los ‘ 90s. ¿Aún se visitan ustedes dos, y hay algo que pueda suceder a futuro?
Todavía nos vemos, torpemente, especialmente cuando tenemos gigs en los Estados Unidos.. Una Colaboración no sucederá como en los viejos tiempos. En aquellos dias, la mayoría del DJs trabajaban con varios apodos en varios estilos, pero hoy en dia hemos parado el hacer de eso. Tampoco estoy opuesto a una nueva colaboración, porque siento que a la audiencia actual le gustaría ver algo así. ¿Quién sabe?

¿No se te hace molesto que es Ferry Corsten, la marca, y no la persona?
A veces, incluso no saben ni como me veo. Puedo estar en una barra en Vietnam y nadie me reconoce. Pero cuando estoy parado detrás de las tornas, se desaparece el techo, y cada una de las personas que esta ahí adentro desea mi autografo. De hecho, me gusta el anonimato. Aunque en Holanda saben exactamente quien soy.

¿En qué países es el trance la música del momento?
En partes de Asia, simplemente no les puedes dar suficiente trance, quieren más. En diciembre, toque en un estadio de tenis en Vietnam, frente a mil personas, el techo voló simplemente lejos. En Holanda, tenemos centenares de fiestas semanales, y la gente ya lo ha visto. Además de Asia, las peticiones de gigs en Suramérica están aumentando. Aparte una gran cantidad de reservaciones han venido de México.

¿Son igual de bien organizadas las fiestas en países extranjeros como las organizan aquí?
Puedes decir que están menos bien organizadas, pero me sorprenden cómo los promotores y los agentes locales han preparado todo. Por supuesto algo siempre sucede mal. Recuerdo todavía llegar a Ibiza, con mi caja de viniles el aeropuerto de Schiphol. Afortunadamente, pude pedir prestados de algunos colegas. ¡Pero las chingaderas suceden!

¿No te cansas de viajar?
Esto es algo a lo que te acostumbras. Por supuesto que no siempre es divertido estar en un avion por horas, pero he aprendido pasar mi tiempo correctamente. Soy bombardeado por demos de productores que apenas van empezando, y en el avion tengo bastante tiempo de escuchar todo. Ya no me da jetlag , creo que es porque reloj interno, esta completamente jodido.

¿Haces mas de una aparición por noche?
Ahora toco solamente una fiesta cada noche. Mi edad de vaquero se acabo. Se ha convertido en puro negocio. El Rock n’ Roll se fue, pero no importa. Tienes un ritmo mejor esta manera, y se ha convertido en algo más profesional. Aunque ha llegado a ser más y más difícil alcanzar la cima, y aún más permanecer allí.

Ser DJ o productor. Todos lo hacen hoy en día. ¿Es buen progreso?
La gente puede comprar una PC con el software por una moneda de diez centavos, para hacer sus propias canciones. Hay mucho desperdicio en el Internet. Desafortunadamente, no muchas personas son oyentes críticos. Eso no hace algo bueno para la música electrónica. Los individuos con talento tienen más dificultad al querer hacer un buen comienzo. He firmado algunos talentos a mi propia disquera, y están haciendo cosas buenas.

¿ Qué estarás haciendo en los siguientes meses?
Tocaré en “free party Dance Tour” también en “Dance Valley”. Y al final del año, hare la segunda edición de “Full On Ferry”. Puede ser que haga una parada en Fast Forward Dance Parade, pero todavía esta por ser confirmado. Tomaré mi decisión en abril. Todo depende de las ofertas que consiga. Y por supuesto Ibiza en el verano.

¿Cómo se ve el futuro en tus ojos? Eres casado. ¿Cuanto tiempo podrás viajar alrededor del mundo?
Mi esposa está cerca en la organización, así que ella va siempre conmigo. No tenemos que faltarnos el uno al otro. Y sobre ser DJ: Sigue siendo mi hobby, y tendrá que ser esa manera. Si no me gusta hacerlo algún dia, me centraré totalmente en producir. Quizá para otros artistas. Pero ése será años delante de mí antes que vea el momento en que eso suceda.

¿Cualquier otra cosa que quisieras decir?
Ehm, sí. Todavía incomoda que todos los medios de información, siempre que hay algo sobre una fiesta, se enfoquen en la cantidad de detenciones o de personas con drogas, mientras que 30.000 otras personas realmente están haciendo de la fiesta, una fiesta divertida.
